Shades Of Deep Purple
Hey Joe (Roberts)
Hey Joe
Where you going with that gun in your hand
Hey Joe
Now tell me where you going with that gun in your hand
I'm gonna shoot my lady
Cos I caught her messing around with another man
Yes, I'm going down to shoot my lady
Cos I caught her messing around with another man

Hey Joe
I heard you shot your woman down
Hey Joe
I heard you shot your woman down
Right down to the ground
Yes I did I shot her
You know I shot her cos I caught her messing 'round town
Yes I did I shot her
I shot my woman cos she was messing 'round town
I gave her the gun - I shot her!

Hey Joe
Tell me where you gonna run to now?
Hey Joe
C'mon tell me where you gonna run to?
Don't you worry about me
I'm going way down South
Way down South where I'm gonna be free
I'm going way down South
Way down South maybe outside Mexico Way
I'm gonna run, oh yeah

Album notes:

SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE was recorded in about 18 hours between
May 11 and May 13 1968, just a few months after the group had
formed. The band was a combination of the groups ROUNDABOUT
(featuring Blackmore, Lord and Simper) and THE MAZE (featuring
Evans and Paice). Blackmore, Lord and Simper had been in the
music business for years, Evans and Paice for not quite as long,
but none of them had ever tasted major success before the release
of the album.
The album was released in September and made #24, while the
single off it, Hush, made #4.
Most of the initial set list was taken off this album together
with other covers. Of these songs, Hush and Mandrake Root were
the most popular; Hush being re-recorded in 1988, and Mandrake
Root clocking in at an unbelievable time of 28:42 on a live
album.
